Are the mothers alright?

“If you want to know the health of a people, look at the health of the mothers.” - Rachelle Garcia Seliga, Innate Traditions

I’ve been sitting in circle each week with other women, other new mothers to tiny humans like me…and, listen, postpartum is hard. But, postpartum in a pandemic is even harder. Parenting is hard. Parenting in a pandemic is harder. With me?

Overall, the mothers are not alright.

We’re tired. Bone tired. We have whiplash from the constant changing of policies that affect our children. We’re alone. Some care providers not even letting in our partners and loved ones to prenatals and ultrasounds and postpartum visits (thank God in my personal experience that was not the case). The village is drying up because of the fear, because of the lack of childcare, because of the lack of steady routines and school. The anxiety is elevated. There is simply too much on our plates.

Forget thriving, many of the mothers I’m looking at are simply surviving. And, I get it. I have my moments where my face is streaked with tears, too.

And, yet…mothers have been on this trajectory for YEARS, generations, maybe even centuries. It just took a global crisis to magnify it. It’s taking too much noise and too many voices to finally hear our own inner wisdom demanding that we need to make a change, to reconnect with ourselves, our bodies, and our intuition in sacred and crucial ways. Will you listen?

What would happen if we celebrated the health of the mothers? Because mothers are central to the health of humanity.

Remember, health isn’t just physical. Postpartum healing doesn’t begin or end with the 6-8 week check-up after baby is born. No, it’s a trajectory. Postpartum has many phases over several years, and real health includes our energetic, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, too. These facets are often neglected by modern care. And, this is exactly why I’ve created the Afterglow Postpartum 12 Week Mentorship program. Ayurveda and Chinese medicine state that the way we heal postpartum affects our health for the rest of our lives (and our children’s, too).

When we re-center the mother’s health in a society, our children’s well-being will flourish. This I can promise you. Our nervous systems are so delicately connected to our children’s. So instead of focusing only on the physical postpartum (i.e. stitches, bleeding, exercise, sex), let’s also pay careful attention to postpartum healing in the areas that you cannot see with your eyes, but that you can feel in your heart.

I believe the mothers can be more than alright. I believe they can thrive. Even in this tumultuous time. We simply need each other, and to connect the many layers of our being. Yoga and Ayurveda are beautiful vehicles for that, and are particularly powerful when coupled in the arms of community.

Please join me for the Masterclass on the 12th. Replay will be available for 45 days. Please let me know if you have any questions. You are welcome here and I’d love to see you.

Jai Ma.

With love,
Leanne

P.S. If you know of a mother who would benefit from this Postpartum Healing Masterclass, please spread the word. I love that this class is also falling right around Valentine’s Day - what a beautiful way to love on the Self. Register here by January 31 for $111 OFF.
